Some "on the ground reporting" suggested they are real.
That said, quite honestly, I have a hard time believing anything from anyone - even people that have been trustworthy in the past.
I've adopted a couple of things:
1. Only believe 1/2 of what you see, and none of what you hear.
2. Trust, but verify.
3. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
4. Stick to primary sources
Of course, these don't guarantee anything, but it tends to weed out most of the crap.
