John 12:1–11
Friends, in today’s Gospel, Mary of Bethany anoints Jesus’ feet with perfumed oil, preparing him for burial.
This gesture—wasting something as expensive as an entire jar of perfume—is sniffed at by Judas, who complains that, at the very least, the nard could have been sold and the money given to the poor.
Why does John use this tale to preface his telling of the Passion? Why does he allow the odor of this woman’s perfume to waft, as it were, over the whole of the story? It is because, I believe, this extravagant gesture shows forth the meaning of what Jesus is about to do: the absolutely radical giving away of self.
There is nothing calculating, careful, or conservative about the woman’s action. Flowing from the deepest place in the heart, religion resists the strictures set for it by a fussily moralizing reason (on full display in those who complain about the woman’s extravagance). At the climax of his life, Jesus will give himself away totally, lavishly, unreasonably—and this is why Mary’s beautiful gesture is a sort of overture to the opera that will follow.
@AnonymousNurse One has to go all the way back to the garden of Eden to understand why. It is Eve that will lead to the answer and not Mary alone.
“Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.”John 2:4 KJV shall point one in that right direction.

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Live Under the Blessing
Jesus suffered and died for our sake. He suffered and died, not in despair, not as the rejected one, but as the Beloved Child of God. From the moment he heard the voice that said, “You are my Beloved, on you my favor rests,” he lived his life and suffered his pain under the Blessing of the Father. He knew that even when everyone would run away from him, his Father would never leave him alone.
For us, the greatest temptation is to lose touch with the Blessing. We are Beloved Sons and Daughters of God. When we live our suffering under the Blessing, even the greatest pain, yes, even death, will lead us deeper into the forgiving and lifegiving heart of God. But when we think we are not loved, when we reflect on ourselves as living under a curse, when we say or think: “I am not good,” our suffering will lead us to despair and our death cannot give life.

Everything…
DAILY MEDITATION | MARCH 15, 2024
Everything that Belongs to Jesus is Given for Us to Receive
Our lives are destined to become like the life of Jesus. The whole purpose of Jesus’ ministry is to bring us to the house of his Father. Not only did Jesus come to free us from the bonds of sin and death; he also came to lead us into the intimacy of his divine life. It is difficult for us to imagine what this means. We tend to emphasize the distance between Jesus and ourselves. We see Jesus as the all-knowing and all-powerful Son of God who is unreachable for us sinful, broken human beings. But in thinking this way, we forget that Jesus came to give us his own life. He came to lift us up into loving community with the Father. Only when we recognize the radical purpose of Jesus’ ministry will we be able to understand the meaning of the spiritual life. Everything that belongs to Jesus is given for us to receive. All that Jesus does we may also do.

Spiritual Being
I am a spiritual being, free and unlimited.
Saturday February 10, 2024
I am a spiritual being having a human experience. This awareness helps me keep the inevitable ups and downs of life in perspective and reminds me to meet life from a place of strength and resilience.
When I feel in need of inspiration or guidance, I go within to feel the power of my divine gifts. With the light of faith, love, and imagination, I see possibilities and find the courage to overcome challenges. I am guided step by step, moment by moment.
I am a radiating center of light, joy, and love and a presence of goodness. With a grateful heart, I share my divine gifts generously in service because I am here to express the life of God. The entirety of Spirit is within me and all around me. I go forth in faith and love.
If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body.—1 Corinthians 15:44
Life Is Precious
The beauty and preciousness of life is intimately linked with its fragility and mortality. We can experience that every day—when we take a flower in our hands, when we see a butterfly dance in the air, when we caress a little baby. Fragility and giftedness are both there, and our joy is connected with both.

Making Room to Welcome Friends
If it is true that solitude diverts us from our fear and anger and makes us empty for a relationship with God, then it is also true that our emptiness provides a very large and sacred space where we can welcome all the people of the world. There is a powerful connection between our emptiness and our ability to welcome. When we give up what sets us apart from others— not just property but also opinions, prejudices, judgments, and mental preoccupations—then we have room within to welcome friends as well as enemies.

He told them still another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a yeast that a woman took and mixed into a large amount of flour until it worked through all the dough."

Free
I am free to be me.
Saturday September 2, 2023
There may have been times in my past when I felt I had to keep a part of myself hidden because I feared I would not be accepted exactly as I am.
Today I leave fear behind. I am ready to live fully into my identity as a beloved child of God, expressing uniquely as me. I accept and celebrate all aspects of myself.
Even as I grow and change, my divine identity is my anchor. My connection with God tells me I am worthy, deserving of all good things, opportunities to shine, and being welcomed and accepted for who I am, as I am.
This awareness is the key to my freedom. I need not rely on approval from others to know I am valued and blessed. The Christ within is my true identity. I am wondrously, gloriously free.
Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me in a broad place.—Psalm 118:5

The Chosenness of the Other
When we claim and constantly reclaim the truth of being the chosen ones, we soon discover within ourselves a deep desire to reveal to others their own chosenness. Instead of making us feel that we are better, more precious or valuable than others, our awareness of being chosen opens our eyes to the chosenness of others. That is the great joy of being chosen: the discovery that others are chosen as well. In the house of God there are many mansions. There is a place for everyone—a unique, special place. Once we deeply trust that we ourselves are precious in God’s eyes, we are able to recognize the preciousness of others and their unique place in God’s heart.

Thrive
I thrive in joy and wholeness.
Monday, October 24, 2022
Today I pause to center myself in the unlimited wellspring of life and love that has its source in God.
Just as a verdant oasis can thrive in an arid desert, I can thrive even in the harshest, most arduous conditions when I draw my strength and energy from the ever-refreshing, ever-renewing divine source.
I turn from all that wears me down, all that is taxing and fatiguing, and find the wholeness that is my divine right. I claim vibrant health and energy. I turn from that which is troubling and worrisome and find joy. I discover the peace that sparkles in my soul and fills my heart.
With gratitude, I affirm: The conditions of the world have no power over me. One with God, I thrive. Amen.
They are planted in the house of the Lord; they flourish in the courts of our God.—Psalm 92:13
