This banner, representing the American Society of Pewterers, was carried through New York on July 23, 1788, in the grand parade celebrating the ratification of the Constitution. At the time of the parade New York itself had yet to ratify, and Alexander Hamilton was engaged in a Herculean effort to turn the tide in a legislature set overwhelmingly against it.
