This RAIN2 growth shows a couple things. First, the reason you don't see this thick growth on other scrubbers is because their lights are too weak. Second, to clean this you can just lift up the tray (with the pipe) and take to your sink; try that with other box-style scrubbers where you have to turn the water off, disconnect pipes, and take the whole box to your sink so you can scrape the bottom clean. Lastly, if you want to feed your fish, just remove the red cap and slide the screen out and drop it into your display; that's a lot of fresh green food for at least a day!

This RAIN2 look fairly new, and needs a bit more flow off the bottom of the screen. But look how easy the tray is to clean compared to box style scrubbers.
This HOG3® (and other HOG models) can go on the glass of the display if you don't have a sump.
The HOG2x® is the largest scrubber for freshwater. A large flat Green Grabber® back wall, which is best for FW slime; no strings which get caught up when you brush it in your sink; and six LEDS which is the most you can get with just one power supply.

This DROP1.2 or 1.2x or 1.4 in a larger system is growing live food. Also it helps reduce glass cleaning by a few days. If you wanted to filter, you would need a larger scrubber size, or more of them.
With 12 deep red algae-growing LEDs and 2 power plugs, the HOG3xx® scrubber is about as much light as you can put into a small space. This can be too much light for low-nutrient water, so for this you only use 1 power plug.
This HOG1® or 1x looks fairly new and is getting an early growth of brown slime. After a brushing in tap water, it will probably start growing some green hair algae next.

The two independent growth compartments of the SURF8 and 8x (lights not shown) allow you to clean/harvest one while letting the other continue to grow/filter. This reduces the nutrients yo-yo effect that can occur after cleaning a regular one-compartment or one-screen scrubber.
The inside of the light dome of the RAIN2 (tm) looks simple. What you can't see is the wiring inside the waterproof submersible white case of the GEM5® lights which controls the heat of the LEDs so that it does not have to reduce power when out of the water (like apparently all other submersible light have to do).
When RAIN scrubber growth gets thick, it requires very strong GEM5 lights to penetrate down to the attachment surface to keep the growth alive. This is why other scrubbers don't get thick... their lights are not strong enough. Feed the growth to your fish by using a clip or dropping the whole screen in...
