Israel's defense minister says #Israel is laying SIEGE to the Gaza Strip, cutting off supplies of food, water, fuel and electricity to the 2+ million civilian residents who live there. Although the actions of #Hamas attacks against Israel were abhorrent and barbarous, personally I cannot condone the punishing of 2 million civilians - women, children, elderly - by forcing them to starve to death, to die from dehydration, to shut down the power for their hospitals and health clinics, and to force their sewage systems to fail, causing widespread outbreaks of cholera and waterborne diseases. Israel's siege tactics, aimed at civilians in Gaza, are themselves barbaric and consist of war crimes under established UN conventions. To target an entire ethnic group of civilians with death by famine, dehydration and disease while they are under kinetic bombardment is unacceptable. It is #genocide.
So today marks the beginning of the end of all single-use plastic items in Canada! We can no longer get/use straws, cutlery, bags, stir sticks, takeout containers, etc. made of plastic. We also cannot import them or sell them.
These are all being replaced with the wood and paper versions of themselves, or cloth for bags. So now we can bet that there will be an issue with trees before long!
Some of these obstacles are easy to overcome, like using cloth bags for groceries, but some aren't, like the need for straws for ill people. The straw issue is further complicated by the fact that paper straws are virtually useless, and glass and metal straws have their various drawbacks of breakage or reaction with the liquids they are used in plus the need for washing which may or may not be done properly.
It's going to be interesting.

I'm listening to a live zoom call between the Ottawa police, the city councillors, and other local officials about what is going to happen with the incoming truck protestors. I am pleased to report that the Chief of Police and the other police spokespeople are FULLY in support of the truckers exercising their right to protest. The Ottawa police have heard only GOOD reports from all the other cities and towns across Canada that the truckers have already rolled through....
