Georgia’s USAID-Funded Media Network
Funding:
• USAID has poured over $10 million into Georgia’s media sector under the guise of “supporting independent journalism.” (in addition to millions elsewhere)
• Funded pro-opposition outlets like TV Pirveli, Mtavari Arkhi, and Formula TV, all known for pushing anti-government narratives.
• Worked with the NED and OSF (Soros) to train journalists and influence public discourse.
• USAID-backed programs like “Strengthening Democratic Resilience in Georgia” specifically targeted media control.
What they do:
Georgia’s so-called “independent” media is a direct extension of U.S. foreign policy, used to destabilize governments that refuse to align with Western interests. These outlets manufacture discontent, smear opposition to NATO, and promote U.S.-backed political candidates.
Major Exposures:
1. USAID’s Role in Georgia’s 2020 & 2024 Elections
• USAID funded election monitoring organizations that actively promoted anti-government narratives.
• In 2020, pro-Western NGOs falsely claimed mass electoral fraud to delegitimize the ruling Georgian Dream party.
• USAID ramped up media funding ahead of the 2024 elections to push a NATO-aligned candidate.
2. Media Manipulation for Regime Change
• USAID has directly funded pro-opposition media outlets that attack the government while shielding Western-backed figures from scrutiny.
• Formula TV and Mtavari Arkhi coordinated anti-government protests in 2023, portraying them as “organic uprisings.”
• Leaked documents show U.S. officials held strategy meetings with journalists from these outlets.
3. The Rose Revolution
• USAID played a key role in the 2003 Rose Revolution, which overthrew the government of Eduard Shevardnadze.
• Rustavi-2, a USAID-backed media outlet, ran round-the-clock propaganda to fuel protests.
• After the revolution, USAID funneled millions into training new pro-Western media figures.
4. USAID’s Disinformation Campaign Against Anti-NATO Sentiment
• Any Georgian politician or activist advocating for neutrality is immediately labeled as “pro-Russian” by USAID-backed media.
• In 2023, TV Pirveli launched a smear campaign against Georgian Dream officials opposing NATO expansion, calling them “Russian agents.”
• USAID-funded NGOs coordinate with these outlets to silence dissenting voices.
Variety of non-Georgian flags at a protest.
