DISTILLING WATER WITH TWO BOTTLES: Need two glass bottles with same size mouths. Fill first bottle half full of water (as clean of water as possible, remove visible contaminants, perhaps with white cotton cloth). Bury first bottle in sand. Build small fire on top of sand mound. Sand heats up. Bottle has thermal contact with sand so bottle heats up and heats the water. At mouth of the first bottle, put the mouth of the second bottle, facing opposite direction, so that the mouths are touching, with botle on its side on the ground. Rotate second periodically to keep it cool. Wrap it in wet cloth to keep it cool. Water condenses/drips from top of inside second bottle and collects in bottom of second bottle. But synthetic contaminants including gasoline and perhaps pharmaceuticals evaporate with the water and distill into the second bottle with the distilled water. So use water with as little of the other things that distill as possible. [Sorry I do not recall the source; perhaps the source is Tom Brown, Jr. in one of his survival guides. I have not tried this myself.] Hoping this helps the good people of Asheville to convert storm water to safe drinking and washing water.
