It's been go time for gardening here! Our soil is very poor and our fruit trees arrived. So I borrowed a some wisdom from "David the Good" that he uses for his melon pits.
#1. Dig a deep hole
#2. Throw manure, food scraps, etc in the bottom.
#3. Light a fire in the pit.
#4. Extinguish it before all wood burns up.
#5. Thin layer grass clippings
#6. Thin layer dirt
#7. Thin layer grass clippings
#8. Repeat until the hole and plant are filled and covered.
#9. Mound of dirt around the perimeter.

In the Amazon they would dig a hole, light wood on fire and then smother the fire. It creates charcoal and is called Terra Preta. It makes the soil dark and extremely fertile. Some claim that it is better than adding fertilizer. Most people report 2 or 3 times the crop production. Some soils have been producing for over 2000 years.
It is something that all farmers should do. You can add up to 600 tons per acre.
For those who believe in sequestering carbon, this works.
