@GoldieElaine My mom was an orphan in WV after her Dad died in a coal mining accident and her mother couldn't take care of 5 children. She told me that she nearly had to join the Orphan Train, but by God's grace, it never happened.
@GoldieElaine One thing good that happened to my Mom was that after high school, she and a girlfriend joined the WAVES on the "Buddy System" and my mom got a job as a secretary at the Pentagon and then got on the 3 cent stamp representing the Naval branch of the woman's armed forces. I have a picture of her with President Truman. And she told me of having lunch in the Rose Garden with Bess Truman.
